We don’t need another hero…

Posted by bart in organizational development

Mad_max_beyond_thunderdomeThis was a line from a very popular song created for a clut-classic movie in the 80s, Mad Maxx: Beyond Thunderdome. Now if you do not know who Mad Maxx is, take a lazy Saturday afternoon with your television and watch one. Definitely not kid friendly but very high entertainment and “cheese” value.

The story within this song talked about an oppressed people that really had no desire to get their hopes up by putting all their faith in another “hero” that past experience showed them, may not really save them. A population of post-apocolyptic survivors fed up with the promises of one person coming in, stealing away valuable resources in exchange for promises to save them, only to leave them more broke and still enslaved. Disappointed again and again by a "hero" leading them into yet another failure, not teaching them how to survive on their own, and leaving them yet again fend for themselves. Sound familiar?

Most businesses would say that they are trying to now do business in a post-apocolyptic economy. And sadly, many times, when a company or individual hires an outside consultant, they [the company] have hopes for someone to come in and save them, and sadly the consultant wants [and promises] to be their hero.
